CLARKSVILLE — First responders were called Friday evening to a report of a 3-year-old boy who had been shot in the face.

Lt. Steve Warren, public information officer with Clarksville Police, said the child died after being taken to Tennova Healthcare in Clarksville.

Authorities originally reported the child was being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Clarksville Police were called Friday evening to a home on Samantha Lane where a boy had been shot in the mouth. He later died.

Warren said the incident happened at a private residence on Samantha Lane.

Warren said the child suffered a single gunshot wound to the mouth from a .40-caliber handgun, which a news release from CPD said was self-inflicted.

The boy was visiting with family from Fort Riley, Kan., Warren said. The homeowner and gun owner was not the parent of the child, he said. The release said the connection between the family and the homeowner had not been established Friday night.

CPD first responded to the call of a gunshot wound on Samantha Lane at 5:26 p.m. The child was transported to Tennova Healthcare,  where he died.

The release said the gunshot wound was self-inflicted but accidental.

Detective Chris Noland is the lead investigator. Warren said no charges had been filed Friday night, but the investigation was continuing.
