Killer of 2 Clarksville police officers up for parole

Leaf-Chronicle

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. The man who caused the death of two Clarksville Police officers during a vehicle pursuit in 2002 has another parole hearing next month.

Sharfyne L. White was sentenced to 33 years in prison in December 2004 after pleading guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated robbery, according to Leaf-Chronicle archives.

The charges came from a June 7, 2002, incident in which White, a serial robber, robbed a St. Bethlehem motel, then was pursued by Officer David Scott, 42, and Officer Yamil Baez-Santiago, 23.

During the pursuit, the CPD cruiser crashed on 101st Airborne Division Parkway, and both officers were killed.

Scott left behind a wife and four children. Baez-Santiago left a wife and two children.

White, who has served only nine years of his 33-year sentence, had his first parole hearing in October 2009, and Clarksville Police publicly pushed for him to remain behind bars, encouraging letters from the public to the Tennessee Board of Parole.

"I never get involved in parole hearings, but this one hits close to the heart," Police Chief Al Ansley told The Leaf-Chronicle at the time. "We did lose two officers as a result of Mr. White's actions."

In a news release this week, Police Sgt. Charles Gill said White has another hearing coming up on Oct. 1.
